Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz
Keene, Kern County · California
Kern County closed its tuberculosis sanatorium at Keene in 1967 and would not sell the property to a farm workers' union. So a film producer who backed the movement bid on it instead, and in 1970 the buildings passed to the union anyway. Chavez moved the headquarters up here from Delano on the argument that the work needed a place to think, away from the daily pressure of the fields. He named it Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz. He and Helen are buried in the garden.
