Noble's Trail Campsite
Jerauld County · South Dakota
Levi Hain and his wife, Maribee, began here with a sod house in 1876 and soon built the log cabin this plaque remembers. A county history counts Hain and a man named Nicholson, who squatted about four miles away, as Jerauld County's first settlers. In 1880 the Hains sold the house and land to the Rev. A. B. Smart, a Methodist minister, and the cabin became the town's first school. A city sign a short walk north marks the hollow where it stood, and the big cottonwoods around the ballfield are trees Hain planted.
