Historical Marker
Nicholas Wren
Winona, Smith County · Texas
Erected 1968
Wren's marker names the Battle of the Hondo and gives no date. The Woll campaign's fight on Hondo Creek, the Battle of the Arroyo Hondo, came on September 21, 1842, after Gen. Adrian Woll's army left San Antonio. A small band of Texas Rangers under John Coffee Hays attacked on the creek's banks and captured a cannon battery, but had to abandon it when the main Texan force did not advance; four Rangers were wounded. The Texans then disbanded, and Woll's army returned to Mexico.
