Near Here at the Old Jonesboro Crossing Sam Houston
Manchester, Red River County · Texas
Erected 1936
Pat B. Clark's 1937 history of Red River County fills in the crossing. On the south bank stood an old cottonwood, and Clark writes that James Clark and others tied their boats to it from 1824 for several years, while the spot served as a landing. Clark photographed the stump. He also says Lieutenant James Clark received Sam Houston into Texas at old Jonesboro in 1832, and that by the time of San Jacinto the two men knew each other well from that meeting.
