The Mystery Spot

Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County · California

No state plaque stands here. The long board at the start of the tour, headed A History of the Mystery Spot, is the attraction's own first-person tale of compasses going wrong, and a roadside sign carries the landmark number; neither is cast. The state registered the place in 2014 as California's first tilt-box roadside attraction. Its effects are perception: psychologists at Berkeley in 1999 and Santa Cruz in 2005 traced the visitors who seem to change height and the weight that seems hard to push to a cabin built at a tilt on a steep hillside.
