Myrtle Attaway Farquhar (1900-1972)
Hobbs, Lea County · New Mexico
This panel is reported missing from its post on the Lovington Highway, and no photograph of it has turned up. Myrtle Farquhar came to Hobbs with a master's degree from Texas College and a husband working the new oil fields, and in 1943 took a post at Booker T. Washington, a two-room school for the town's Black children. Neighborhood children were tutored around the Farquhar kitchen table, and the couple helped pay for ten students' college. She helped start the Washington Heights Nursery School, and the city renamed Second Street, near the school, for the couple.
