Mountain House

Mountain House was the northernmost Butterfield stop in what is now Kern County, twelve miles short of Fountain Spring over the Tulare line. The stage lists also carry it as Willow Springs, for the creek it stood on. The marker sits a mile and a half south of the site on the Bakersfield to Glennville road, and its cast line is odder than either the register or the transcriptions admit: what stood a mile and a half north, it says, was the site of the station.
What the plaque says
Mountain House One and one-half miles north of this point stood the site of the Butterfield Stage station known as Mountain House. Operating through present Kern County during 1858-1861 this famous line ran from St. Louis, Missouri, to San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War.
