Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

This bronze names two padres and three architectures. It does not name the people who built the place. The mission went up at Quechla, Payómkawichum country, and grew into the most populous in the chain, holding close to 2,900 people by 1826. One of them was Pablo Tac, born here about 1822. He left with Father Peyri in 1832, reached Rome two years later, invented a writing system for his own language, and wrote the earliest surviving account of a California mission by a Native Californian. He died there at nineteen.
