Millie Durgan, White Captive
Kiowa County · Oklahoma
Erected by Oklahoma Historical Society
The Elm Creek Raid came on October 13, 1864, when several hundred Kiowa and Comanche rode into the Elm Creek valley in western Young County, Texas, northwest of Fort Belknap. Peter Harmonson and his son killed one of the leaders from a thicket. At George Bragg's cabin, settlers held off repeated charges until the riders heard a Confederate company coming and turned north with cattle and horses; the pursuing company rode into an ambush that killed five soldiers. Captives taken that day were ransomed or recovered through 1865, some by the Comanche chief Asa-Havey during peace talks.
