Marmaduke-Walker Duel
Jacksonville, Pulaski County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
At dawn on September 6, 1863, two Confederate generals faced each other with Colt Navy revolvers at fifteen paces. John Marmaduke and Lucius Walker had been trading blame since the Battle of Helena. Each man brought a second and two doctors; Price's order to stay at headquarters had not reached Walker, and Marmaduke ignored it. Both first shots missed. Marmaduke's second struck Walker in the right kidney, and Walker died the next day in Little Rock, having learned that morning of the birth of his son. Sterling Price had Marmaduke arrested, then released him, and the charges were dropped.
