Lyndon Baines Johnson
Stonewall, Gillespie County · Texas
Erected 1971
Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, on a farm near Stonewall, the eldest of five children of Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr., a former legislator, and Rebekah Baines Johnson, who encouraged his ambition. After trying jobs in California and Texas without success, he entered Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1927 as a history and social science major active in campus politics. With an elementary teacher's certificate in 1928 he spent a year as principal and teacher at Cotulla, where his destitute Hispanic students shaped his view of poverty and government. He took his degree in 1930.
