Los Coches Rancho (Richardson Adobe)

Soledad, Monterey County · California

The state bronze that stood here is gone, reported stolen, and only its stone remains; the empty adobe can be seen through a chain-link fence. The state registered the landmark as the Richardson Adobe, but the Mexican grant of 1841 was made to María Josefa Soberanes, of a Monterey family, in her own name. Her husband, William Brunner Richardson, a tailor from Baltimore, built the house in 1843, and it later served travellers as an inn and stage stop. Margaret Jacks gave it to the state in 1958.
