Lone Mountain
Gallatin County · Montana
The skiers' Lone Mountain was a television anchor's idea. Chet Huntley, born in Cardwell and fourteen years on NBC's nightly news, came home to front Big Sky, a development many Montanans opposed as public wild land turned into a resort, and he won the state governors' leave to borrow Montana's own nickname for it. The lifts opened in December 1973. Huntley, a smoker, died of lung cancer on March 20, 1974, three days before the resort's dedication, and in 1976 Everett Kircher's Boyne company bought it.
