Lindenau

Lindenau, DeWitt County · Texas
Erected 1979

A song named the town. German farm families settled here in 1891, and in 1893 a school first called Wofford, for the ranch where it stood, was renamed after an entertainer sang the German song Lindenau at a benefit. Mail came twice a week by mule-drawn wagon from Cuero, the nearest bank and railhead. Lutherans organized in 1902 and built a church in 1912. In 1906 the community moved a mile to the new depot on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio line, leaving the school behind. In 1920 the post office was briefly Lindeman.

What the plaque says

Lindenau By 1891 German farmers settled in this area which Charles and Daniel Wild named "Lindenau." A schoolhouse built in 1893 served as a community center and for worship. The settlement boasted a church, cemetery, mercantile store, blacksmith shop, drugstore, post office, and cotton gin. The present rifle club formed in 1901 and erected a hall which became the social center. In 1906 Lindenau was moved to be near the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad. The post office closed in 1947 and Lindenau School consolidated with Westhoff. Many descendants remain in the area. (1979)
