Lewistown Army Airfield

Fergus County · Montana

What the panel's squadrons left behind still stands nearby. The field came alive when the first B-17s roared over Lewistown's Main Street on October 28, 1942, bomb bays open, and it closed after about eleven months. Its Norden bombsight was kept in a small poured-concrete building of two vaults behind bank-vault doors, under guard around the clock; the National Register nomination calls it the only identified Norden bombsight building left in the country. Six of the field's buildings were listed in 2000 and more in 2004, and the wartime hangar still serves the municipal airport.
