Lewis Nez

Lewis Nez, born in 1900 into the Tó'dích'íi'nii, the Bitter Water Clan, hauled freight and mail by wagon between Flagstaff and Kanab for the merchants of the Cedar Ridge country. He had ten children. On June 7, 1928, he and two other men were crossing the Colorado on the ferry with a Ford Model T aboard when the boat went down. His body was never recovered. It was the ferry's last trip; the disaster helped end the crossing. His Diné community remembers him as a friend to everyone.
What the plaque says
born 1900 of the To'di'chi'i'nii (Bitter Water) Clan. He married twice, first to Fannie and second to Bessie Betoney. He had ten children. He was employed by the Cedar Ridge Trading Post. He was responsible for hauling supplies, U.S. Postal Mail and money for the local merchants by wagon between Flagstaff, Arizona and Kanab, Utah., His life ended tragically on June 7, 1928 when he and two other men were crossing the Colorado River on the ferry with a Ford Model T on board.
