Lefty Grove
Hot Springs, Garland County · Arkansas
Lefty Grove came to Hot Springs three times, in 1935, 1939 and 1940, to fix his arm. After a sore arm left him 8-8 with a 6.50 earned run average for Boston in 1934, he spent three weeks here before spring training, playing 36 holes of golf carrying his own bag or using a rowing machine when it rained. He went 20-12 with a 2.70 ERA that year. After a dead arm in 1938 he returned with teammates, trained daily with golf and hot baths, and led the league in 1939 with a 2.54 ERA.
