Lea County Cowgirls

Tatum, Lea County · New Mexico

Fern Sawyer's titles came against men. She rode in a Madison Square Garden rodeo in 1939, beat twenty men at the Pecos rodeo in 1943, and in 1945 was the only woman entered when she won the cutting at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show. She was a charter member of the National Cutting Horse Association and the first director of the Girls Rodeo Association, and for years led the post parade at Ruidoso Downs. Her mother, Dessie, said she took to politics because that was where the fun was.
