To All Pioneers Who Passed This Way (Big Piney)
Sublette County · Wyoming
The stone thanks the pioneers who traveled the road and says nothing of the men who built it. Lander's crew in the summer of 1858 numbered about 115, many of them recruited among Mormon emigrants in Salt Lake City, though the road was widely thought to be meant to steer travelers clear of the Mormon settlements. In under ninety days they moved roughly 62,000 cubic yards of earth and cut road through 11 miles of willow and 23 miles of pine forest, for $67,873.
