Historical Marker
Kleberg County
Kingsville, Kleberg County · Texas
Erected 1936
The new county was organized quickly. The 1913 law named five residents to set it up, and Anton Felix H. von Blücher surveyed its boundaries and precincts before the June 27 election; the first officials worked from rented offices in downtown Kingsville. Voters approved bonds for a courthouse and a hospital, both finished by 1914, and in 1919 a $350,000 issue for a hard-surfaced highway south through Kingsville and Ricardo to Riviera. The railroad's general offices and shops made its workers a third of Kingsville's people. German Catholic families sponsored by the Catholic Colonization Society settled Vattman in 1908.
