Kern River Slough Station

What stands here is a replacement. The granite went up in 1996 over wording dedicated in June 1957, and whoever cut it repeated a word: the line reads until the the outbreak of the Civil War. The station stood just south of this point, twelve miles south of the Kern River crossing and fourteen northeast of the Sinks of Tejon, on ground where the river spread into sloughs before it reached the lakes. The Butterfield lists give it no other name.

What the plaque says

Kern River Slough Just south of this point stood the Butterfield Overland Stage site known as Kern River Slough. Operating through present Kern County during 1858-1861. This famous line ran from St. Louis, Missouri to San Francisco until the the outbreak of the Civil War. Dedicated June 30, 1957 Marker placed by Kern County Historical Society El Tejon Parlor No. 239 N.D.G.W. Kern County Museum State Registered Landmark No. 588 Re-dedicated Oct. 6. 1996
