This panel's voyage passed the Big Dry the day after naming the Milk. On May 9, 1805, Lewis recorded the bed of the most extraordinary river he had ever seen: half a mile wide, as wide as the Missouri, holding a few standing pools and not one drop of running water. He walked it about three miles, supposed it reached back toward the Black Hills, and called it Big dry river. Three days earlier the party had named a Little Dry Creek, a Big Dry Creek and a Little Dry River, and the name has stayed on the maps.
