John G. Neihardt Study
Cuming County · Nebraska
Erected by Nebraska State Historical Society
The study began as a family's house. The 1970 National Register nomination, prepared by John Q. Magie of the State Historical Society, says August Hartman is believed to have built it in the early 1890s for his daughter and her husband: one story, one room, frame, with a gable roof and a veranda. Neihardt rented it from the Canarsky family as an office and library, and The Stranger at the Gate, The Death of Agrippina and The Quest belong to those years. The Neihardt Foundation replaced its deteriorated flooring and siding, and it was listed on July 28, 1970.
