Susan LaFlesche Picotte Memorial Hospital
Thurston County · Nebraska
Erected by Susan LaFlesche Picotte Center, Inc. and Nebraska State Historical Society
Dr. Picotte raised the $8,000 for William L. Steele's building from private donors. It took patients until the late 1940s, then served other purposes, and in 2018 the National Trust for Historic Preservation named it one of the country's most endangered historic places. A committee of her descendants and Umóⁿhoⁿ community leaders, formed in 2017, planned its restoration, and the Nebraska Medical Association helped raise $600,000. At an open house in June 2025 the Picotte Center reopened there, with an exam room, a mental health space, an exhibit on her life and a makers space for regalia.
