Jefferson County First Court House
Pine Bluff, Jefferson County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
The first courthouse of Jefferson County was a cabin. Territorial governor John Pope approved the act creating the county on November 2, 1829, and the first county seat was Joseph Bonne's cabin, which he had built in autumn 1819 for his Quapaw wife and family on a high bluff covered with pine trees. Pine Bluff became the county seat in August 1832, and at the commissioners' first meeting that October they recommended the name Pine Bluff Town. The town was incorporated in January 1839.
