J. W. Fannin

Goliad, Goliad County · Texas

Fannin's record as a commander was mixed before Goliad. He led the Texans with James Bowie at Concepción in October 1835, then declined Sam Houston's offer of the inspector general's post and pressed for a larger regular army. In 1836 he recruited for the Matamoros expedition and from February 12 to March 12 acted as commander in chief. Many volunteers disliked his scorn for elected officers; one private wrote that most soldiers did not like him. In his last weeks he asked repeatedly to be relieved. Fannin County, the town of Fannin and Camp Fannin carry his name.
