Izard County First Courthouse
Melbourne, Izard County · Arkansas
Erected 1936
The governor Izard County honors was a soldier more than a pioneer. George Izard, born near London in 1776, was a War of 1812 major general criticized for caution on the northern frontier before President Monroe made him Arkansas Territory's second governor. He reached the territory on May 31, 1825, and the county was created that October 27. His duties included overseeing the removal of Native peoples, notably Quapaw and Cherokee, and he clashed with acting governor Robert Crittenden and with the legislature. He died in the territory on November 22, 1828, after a month of gout.
