The panel's reduced was a cession, and the land it took is still called the Ceded Strip. Commissioners concluded the agreement with the Crow on August 14, 1899: about 1,116,000 acres across the reservation's northern edge, roughly a third of tribal land. Congress ratified it, amended, on April 27, 1904, and Roosevelt's proclamation of May 24, 1906 opened it. Homesteaders registered at Miles City, Billings and Sheridan in late June, and a drawing at Billings from July 2 set the order of entry. Ada Channell platted her townsite two years later.
