Hotel del Coronado

Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story bought the whole peninsula in November 1885 for one hundred and ten thousand dollars. At a single auction the following November they sold 350 lots and took back roughly what the land had cost them. The hotel went up on that money, and it went up to make the remaining lots worth buying. Chinese laborers did much of the work, five years after the Exclusion Act, trained on the job by master carpenters. It opened in February 1888, eleven months after groundbreaking.

Hotel del Coronado This Victorian hotel, built in 1887, is one of America's largest wooden buildings. Few seaside resort hotels of this significant architectural style remain in America. The hotel has hosted several presidents and other national figures.
