Nothing cast marks the house the fund built. Mary Ann Brown, widow of the abolitionist hanged in 1859, reached Red Bluff in September 1864 with her daughters and her son Salmon, and admirers raised the money for a small house on Main Street. The register keeps to the admiration. The Red Bluff Sentinel attacked the family in print, and in 1869 arsonists burned the town's Colored School. In 1870 the Browns left for Rohnerville in Humboldt County. Mary died in Saratoga in 1884.
