Home of Matthew Cartwright
San Augustine, San Augustine County · Texas
Erected 1936
The Handbook of Texas calls Matthew Cartwright a merchant and landowner: born in Tennessee in 1807, he came to the Ayish Bayou District as a boy, helped choose San Augustine's townsite in 1832 and opened a store there. From 1847 to 1860 he dealt extensively in Texas land, and he died on April 2, 1870, holding about one million acres. The Handbook says he bought the house in 1849 from his sister-in-law, Mrs. Isaac Campbell, and that Augustus Phelps built it in 1839; it was still in the Cartwright family in 1991.
