Site of Hock Farm

Hock was a Nisenan name before it was a farm. In an 1856 letter to Thomas Henley, the Indian superintendent, Sutter himself counted the Hock people living beside it, merged with the dwindling Yukulme, at about thirty-five men, women and children. He meant the farm as his retirement; arson took his mansion in 1865. The memorial here, raised in 1927 from the fort's own iron, carries bullet holes in its plate. Two state bronzes on the highways point to it, and both date the farm 1844 against the plate's 1841.

What the plaque says

This memorial is constructed of the original iron from the fort of Hock Farm Established in 1841 by John Augustus Sutter Being the first white settlement in Sutter County. The fort and farm buildings were located on the banks of the Feather River opposite this point. Erected by Sutter and Yuba Bi-County Federation of Womens Clubs 1927
