Historic La Grande
Union County · Oregon
The board moves La Grande's center to the railroad in 1884; the railroad also helped win back the county seat. La Grande had been the county seat since 1864, but Union took it in an 1874 election, and a party from Union loaded La Grande's log jail onto wheels cut from a log and hauled it home across Catherine Creek. The railroad bypassed Union in 1885, Union lost voters, and in 1904 La Grande won the seat back. A 1934 La Grande paper said townsmen went to Union one Sunday and brought the records home.
