Historic Highway Map Marker Iona
Lyman County · South Dakota
Erected by Iona Township and Highway Commission, 1956
The crusader on this small bronze was Edward L. Senn, who at one time owned as many as fifty-one South Dakota newspapers, the kind of frontier paper that lived on the final-proof notices homesteaders had to publish. Iona was one of his stops; here, the bronze says, he fought cattle rustlers in print and lost a paper to fire. From 1909 he published the Deadwood Daily Telegram, crusading against saloons and vice, and he became the state's federal Prohibition director. Iona's post office dates from February 1898.
