Hebron Cemetery
Hebron, Washington County · Utah
Erected, 1989
Hebron was a ranching town, begun as Shoal Creek in 1862, never more than a hundred people, out where cattle did better than crops. It might have faded slowly like a dozen other small places. Instead, in November 1902, the ground moved. The Pine Valley earthquake, one of the hardest ever felt in Utah, cracked Hebron's walls and chimneys and shook the fight out of it. Rather than rebuild on ground that had betrayed them, the people moved a few miles to Enterprise and started over. The cemetery stayed behind, tending the ones who could not follow.
