Hat Creek Stage Station
Niobrara County · Wyoming
Erected by Luke Voorhees Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, 1927
The fort this bronze remembers was named for the wrong creek. In 1875 cavalry from Fort Laramie were sent to build an outpost on Hat Creek in Nebraska and built it here on Sage Creek instead, some thirty miles west; by the time anyone noticed, the name had settled into Army files, and in December 1876 the post was formally labeled Camp on Hat Creek. The Lusk chapter announced the tablet in September 1926, in wording that differs from what was cast, for the highway in front of the Hat Creek store.
