Erected 1936
Plains Apaches and, after 1700, Comanches, Kiowas and Kickapoos camped at springs here. A month after Marcy's 1849 expedition, gold seekers bound for California followed his route from Dallas and camped on a stream they named California Creek; a young woman of the party was buried there. Dick Tucker's glowing account later drew his brother Thomas here in 1879. George T. Reynolds and John A. Matthews set up headquarters on California Creek in 1877. The 1880 census counted forty-eight people, and in December 1882 the ranch community of Rice Springs took the name Haskell.
