Gomez Cemetery

Brownfield, Terry County · Texas
Erected 1970

Gomez kept growing for a few years after losing the county seat. A bank opened in 1907, but it moved to Plains in 1909, and around 1910 residents and businesses began leaving for Brownfield. A. P. Moore's general store, built in 1910, did well until it burned in 1920. The South Plains and Santa Fe line laid in 1917 passed east through Brownfield, and in 1918 the old townsite was abandoned to farmland, with a new Gomez begun less than a mile north on the Roswell highway. Only the cemetery is left of old Gomez.
