Gober Baptist Church

Gober, Fannin County · Texas
Erected 1989

Gober sold stone. The Handbook of Texas says a quarry operated there six days a week from about 1900 until the 1930s and ran part-time after 1960. The county's 1888 courthouse, according to its own marker, was built of native stone from Gober by Scottish-born masons Kane and Cormack. The town counted 250 residents and twenty-five businesses by 1890, peaked near 300 in the early 1930s, and had slipped to 146 by 1988 with six churches, one of them the Baptist church whose 1953 building stands here.

What the plaque says

Gober Baptist Church This congregation was organized on August 4, 1889 by the Rev. S. P. Clement and twelve charter members. Early worship services were held in the one-room Gober schoolhouse and in a brush arbor. In 1893 a sanctuary, the first church structure built in Gober, was completed on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. James Eads. It was replaced by a two-story frame building in 1924, which was in turn replaced by a new structure at this site in 1953. Throughout its history Gober Baptist Church has been involved in domestic and foreign missions support and activities. (1989)
