Glendale Congregational Methodist Church
Trinity, Trinity County · Texas
Erected 2018
Congregational Methodist churches grew out of a split. The denomination formed in 1852 in Georgia, when several congregations left the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to join Methodist doctrine to congregational government; each church calls its own pastor and owns its property. Its school, the Congregational Methodist Bible School, opened in Dallas in 1944. The Handbook of Texas says the church bought a campus at Tehuacana in the early 1950s, opened Westminster Junior College and Bible Institute there in 1953, and moved the school to Florence, Mississippi, in 1971.
What the plaque says
Glendale Congregational Methodist Church Organized in 1917, Glendale Congregational Methodist Church began serving the community when the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, discontinued services. The congregation met in the old Methodist church building and then in the Baptist church until erecting a new building in the 1930s, almost exclusively with donations and volunteer work. Over the years, pastors from Westminster College served the congregation and the church campus expanded with classrooms, a fellowship hall, and other improvements. Through local programs and mission work, the church continues to contribute to the community through service and faith. (2018)
