Gen. A. A. Humphrey Post
Grant County · South Dakota
Erected by Gen. A. A. Humphrey Post No. 42, G.A.R. Dept. S.D., 1904
The post chose the day as carefully as the stone. May 30 was Decoration Day, proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, for the graves of the Union dead; it held that date until the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May in 1971. The die faces name four battles, two in the West and two in the East. The initials match the Union general Andrew A. Humphreys, spelled with a final s, but no source found ties the post to him.
