Fountain Springs

The saloon at the crossroads calls itself Fountain Springs and paints Since 1858 on its front, the year the mail stages came, though the settlement the bronze names stood a mile and a half northwest. Beside the corroded 1958 state bronze is a second plaque, about the Old Stage Road, listing the travelers who used the route. From here the stage road climbed south past Tailholt toward Linns Valley, and by 1860 Thomas Baker's road carried it on to the Kern River mines. The state set this bronze on the same day as the one at Lindsay.

What the plaque says

Fountain Springs One and one-half miles northwest of this point the settlement of Fountain Springs was established before 1855. It was at the junction of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road and the one to the Kern River gold mines. From 1858 to 1861 Fountain Springs was a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. California Registered Historical Landmark No. 648 Plaque placed by the California State Park Commission in cooperation with the Tulare County Historical Society, September 28, 1958.
