Fort McKinney Monuments and Plaques
Buffalo, Johnson County · Wyoming
The home this boulder dates to 1903 began five years earlier, at the other end of the state. Wyoming opened its Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in 1898 at Fort D. A. Russell in Cheyenne, under the Board of Charities and Reform, and the 1903 legislature moved it onto the abandoned Fort McKinney grounds the federal government had turned over. It kept that name until the mid-1980s, when it became the Veterans' Home of Wyoming to take in every veterans' group. Three guns around the boulder carry 1941 plaques from Spanish War veterans, the VFW and the Legion.
