Fort Crook

The fort was named for a patient. Captain John Gardiner, whom the bronze spells Gardner, first called his new post Camp Hollenbush after his company's surgeon, then on July 1, 1857, renamed it for the surgeon's best-known case: Lieutenant George Crook, who had taken a poisoned arrow in the hip on the Pit River Expedition and never had the head removed. The reserve ran a mile in every direction from the flagpole. The Army left in 1869, and the Fort Crook Historical Society marked the site in 1934.
What the plaque says
In commemoration of Fort Crook Established July 1 1857 by Lieut' George Crook and command for the protection of the immigrants and settlers. Later occupied by Capt' John W Gardner and Capt McGregor. The boundaries of this fort were designated as one mile in every direction from the flag pole. Abandoned June 1 1869. Marked Nov 11 1934 by the Fort Crook Historical Society, Fall River Valley.
