First Christian Church of Weston

Weston, Collin County · Texas
Erected 1989

Weston is one of the oldest towns in Collin County, and the Handbook of Texas tells how it started. Settlers arrived in the early 1840s, drawn by Blackland Prairie soil and the water of Honey Creek. Larkin Adamson, who came in 1850, built the first store and is credited with naming the town for his hometown, Weston, Missouri. A post office opened in 1854, and Weston was a stop on a stage line from Sherman to Dallas. It was among the first Texas towns with rural free mail delivery, from March 15, 1900.

What the plaque says

First Christian Church of Weston Originally located in the community of Roseland (about 5 mi. W; now known as Alla), this congregation was organized in 1900 by Dr. and Mrs. Moses Hubbard and their neighbors. The Roseland Church building, constructed that same year, was also used by the Baptists, Presbyterian, and Methodist denominations. The Christian Church moved to this site in 1914 and built a new sanctuary on land donated by Sam Dorsey. Led by the Rev. Douglas Darnell, the congregation grew and a tabernacle was built in the 1920s. The church remains an important part of the Weston community. (1989)
