Fifth Street Missionary Baptist Church
Levelland, Hockley County · Texas
Erected 2008
The congregation began in a town that barely existed. Hockley City had no development until the county organized in 1921; that year S. S. Ripley built the first house and J. M. Fleming opened a store, selling it within months to T. W. Bowers, while G. H. Tubb hauled supplies in by truck from Lubbock. B. E. Gunn was the town's schoolteacher before he became postmaster. C. W. Carmack started a newspaper in 1924, and in 1925 the town gained a bank, a gin and a light plant, and Santa Fe service began that July.
What the plaque says
Fifth Street Missionary Baptist Church In 1921, thirteen area residents, under the leadership of a Rev. Curry, organized a congregation, originally known as First Missionary Baptist Church. This was the first church in the newly established Hockley City (now Levelland), and many early pioneers and leaders were members. Members completed a church building in 1926 at this location. The church's first ordained minister was B.E. Gunn, who also served as the town's first postmaster. Since its founding, members have been involved in missions. The church's rich history has also included activities such as maintaining a food pantry, preparing community meals and packing charity boxes for orphans. (2008)
