Evidence of a Catastrophic Event

Garfield County · Montana

The rocks this panel reads produced its most famous fossil. In 1902 Barnum Brown of the American Museum of Natural History found bones of a great meat-eater in the Hell Creek beds near Jordan, and the town store ran short of lumber and plaster as he worked them out over three seasons. Henry Fairfield Osborn named the animal Tyrannosaurus rex in 1905, from thirty-four bones, about 11 percent of the skeleton. After Brown found a more complete skeleton in 1908, the museum put the first in storage and in 1941 sold it to the Carnegie Museum for $7,000.
