Eldorado Ditch
Baker County · Oregon
The board says the ditch was built by Chinese labor, and the numbers are in the record. Chinese contract crews took on the big sections from 1869, and in 1870 some thousand of them were digging, paid two dollars to two and a half a day, one or two dollars less than white workers. By 1878 they had cut a hundred miles of main ditch and feeders across the hills from the Burnt River to the Malheur City mines, the longest mining ditch built in Oregon. Water sales lasted until 1911, and the ditch was abandoned in 1925.
