Read the hedge. The bronze marks the southern terminus of El Camino Real as Padre Serra knew it, and Serra knew this end of the road as the middle. He had charge of the former Jesuit missions in Baja California before he ever saw San Diego, and he rode north from Loreto in 1769 on a mule, with a leg ulcerated since 1749. This became an end only in 1848, when a treaty drew a border across the road. The plaque was cast for his 250th birthday.
