Historical Marker
Egg Pocking / Pâquer Les Œufs
Cottonport, Avoyelles County · Louisiana
Erected 2024
Pocking is a contact sport with rules. Across Louisiana, contest eggs are boiled tip down so the air pocket sits at the butt end, hens are fed calcium-rich food, and champions must break and eat their winning egg to prove it was real. Cheaters once turned to guinea hen eggs, which are smaller and harder, so guinea egg knocking became its own category. Marksville claims to have made egg tapping an official event in 1956. This Cottonport marker, number 173 in the Pomeroy Foundation series, went up in 2024.
